Well, Bahar and her father started searching for homes a couple years later, nearing the end of her middle school journey. Every weekend they had a ritual where they would go to Wholesale clubs located on the outskirts of New York City, on Long Island. They were house hunting in some areas that were ethnically connected to them, however those homes were a little too expensive. Then one day, at random, they saw an open house sign off of a main road and they followed the signs.
They drove down a road along a golf course, until another sign directed them to make a left. They found a split level style house in a beautiful neighborhood they didn’t know existed. Bahar and her dad took a liking to the old man with a wild white outfit who drove a gold Cadillac. That man happened to the real estate broker representing the house. Caddy Man we’ll call him, could easily read Bahar and her dad and said “well you know this house isn’t for you guys, but I’ll show you some other ones.” For a couple of weeks, Bahar and her dad would go do their weekend shopping and then tour houses with this little eccentric old man. Finally they found this beautiful Center Hall Colonial with 5 bedrooms and a huge backyard on a cul-de-sac. This was the place where Bahar could finally get the dog she’s always wanted, which is something her father wanted for her in the worst way. Truthfully, the whole reason why her dad was looking for a house and not an apartment was because, well, he wanted his daughter to have a suburban experience. Growing up in Manhattan, you don’t get a house, instead you have condo and apartment, sometimes with a little patio may be a little terrace, but nothing substantial.
Well, they walk into this house, which was pretty much a time capsule into the 1970s. Pink velvet walls, black carpeting in bathrooms, mint green and pepto bismol pink tiles and toilets, and we cannot forget the pine wall coverings. Five bedrooms for two people was a bit crazy but what was the real selling point? Well they had 3 bedrooms all with their own on-suite bathrooms and large closets. What did that mean? Bahar was going to have her own space and her father felt after everything she had been through, she needed her own space; you know, a little something extra.
After a little finagling, they finally purchased the home and moved in on Christmas Day. Bahar was now 13 years old and about to graduate Middle School. At the time, her father had casually seen a woman with beautiful blond hair who lived in the building next to theirs that they had just vacated. It was nothing serious at the time and he had seen a few other women casually, but nothing of substance. However, that one lady with the long blond hair kept showing up. She had helped them pack their apartment up. She had dinner with them in the past at the apartment, but now she started showing up to their new house. Well, Bahar was very protective over her dad; so much so, she would literally hold her pee all night until this lady went home. At one point blondie was convinced Bahar was a camel; she held her pee like none other!
Eventually, it turned into something a little bit more serious. Blondie would now start spending nights at the house, Bahar her dad and Blondie would go out on weekends and do activities together and when Blondie stayed over, she would take Bahar out to run errands like purchasing feminine products and even teaching her about the different kinds. Imagine being a 13-year old girl and just learning about the different options for feminine self care? It all just happened and things got very serious very quickly; one day Bahar found out Blondie was going to move in. By then, Bahar was OK leaving her dad alone with Blondie because she took a strong liking to her. She appreciated that the woman didn’t have any kids, just two cats, however Bahar was still a little protective over her dad. As time went on, Bahar realized that Blondie didn’t only love her dad, but this woman loved her as well.
Well, Bahar’s birthmother didn’t take this new development very well. Truthfully, everyone was trying to figure out how she found out Blondie moved in. Bahar’s birth mom used to call their house number blocked and hang up the phone. Bahar and her dad would catch her birth mom stalking their house frequently and even caught her parked around the block a few times.
Bahar’s birth mother did all these crazy things, even started calling Bahar’s phone again to probe. It was then did Bahar finally realize that her birth mom needed help. She would say terrible things about Blondie, calling her awful names to a point where Bahar got the courage to say “if you do not stop this harassment, I will be calling the police for a restraining order.” This woman was obsessed at the fact that her ex had moved on, and was happy, but she didn’t really seem to care about Bahar, her only child.
